Standing Rock, North Dakota. There is a Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) being constructed and attempting to gain access to dig under the water to complete the route … the construction endangers the water, crosses Native American burial grounds, and violates the treaty with the United States and the reservation.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has officially denied the final stage of the easement but there is not sign of the DAPL changing their minds to re-route. This is not over.

Overnight at the Art Factory.

I had the pleasure and honor to paint overnight at the Art Factory, not yet open to the public. The owner and creator of a new project in Renfrew, Patrick John Mills, introduced to me the essence of painting what your gut is rolling. And so with that – I embarked on more than one journey that night.

Painting in Sienna - imaginary landscape
Painting in Sienna – imaginary landscape

A penance to the masters I began with a background of vibrance. The combination of Burnt Sienna and Indian Yellow are bold, bright and can allure other colors to dance. I spent a lot of time working on this first layer as Patrick Mills did his best to make two large abstracts. I may be a slower painter – but his opposition is why I enjoy having him next to me.

Another painting was started – almost finished  – and it tore open the lid to an emotional jar of tears. Its the first of a series – keeping it hidden for a while – that will reveal the sexual journey of shame to freedom.

It is important as an artist to expose your most vulnerable if you want to have the world appreciate its depth. Only problem with this is the exposing your most vulnerable. As my personal life deals with a difficult sexual past and a current freedom of its own role  – I have learned to embrace more than I was comfortable with, and I am happy the seal is broken. This full series will be on display when it is completed.

Time Lapse Reflection of Trees

For fun and to make a 20 minute painting example for a private group wanting to learn, I made this time lapse while I worked on a sample painting.

A lesson that I have learned about quick painting in acrylic is how to prioritize colors and work with them even if they don’t want to cooperate. The biggest struggle with fast paintings is when you need it dry but the paint is wet. Making an additional layer that way can be a challenge.

Enjoy this quick one and let me know what you think .

Discovering paint and myself – again.

Starting something NEW !

This may not be something new to you as an audience, after all landscapes are rather old news in the world of oil painting. However, for myself oil painting has been a struggle as well as a release and lately I have discovered that landscapes have been a way for me to explore. I am exploring my brush strokes, the colors I apply, and how I layer them on the canvas.

Layers were taught to me to be methodical and all about pre missing and applying a carefully planned out subject on canvas. Not anymore, say I – for now on I play to layer based on the emotion the color provokes, and layer the paint as if I am instead creating a sculpture of my vision using think paint.

In “Landscape Blue” I discovered a new paint quality I had yet encountered and fell in love. The vivid impact and the relationships it made with neighboring color blew me away. I spent six hours exploring the paint right from the tube and only mixing on the canvas if it “felt appropriate” –

It was after I had this painting I knew that I was at the start of something new. New for myself and how I wanted to paint. Perhaps paintings are really just the medium I use to discover myself. And with these landscapes and an appreciation – almost a love affair – with the paints, I started more landscapes.

The Trees here are inspired by my trip to Corinth, VT but the landscape is not an exact painting of the land I visited. Instead it is a combination of the moment I shared (painting under an umbrella in the heavy rain, thunder and lightning) – and the enjoyment of using pure color again.

I was not using the same brand of paint as in Landscape Blue and I could tell there was a difference in how the paint did not vividly translate what I felt about the colors. It has become clear that my “something new” will also mean making a transition into a new paint brand, a new paint style, and a new paint way of thinking.

So many more to come and when I get the final images taken and uploaded for print – there will be some amazing things captured about this journey I am embarking with myself, my paint and my canvas.

Painted with Patrick John Mills

Landscape Blue

I had the honor to paint at the studio of Patrick John Mills ( / and it was inspiring. He is a kind and an extremely insightful artist. He is aware of his surroundings just as much as his inner self and it shows in the flourishing passion he has for color and paint.

Of course, all this exemplary way of art is infectious ! I ended up using six hours to complete this oil in one day. One day oil is fast for me since I normally spend a week on one painting alone. But I am in love. I love the paint, the brushes and what happened.

Here are some photos!
